As a fashion addict, I'm always curious to see Pantone's yearly colour reveal. Is it going to be bright? Is it going to be pretty? And will it really even matter? I mean let's face it - last year's colour announcement was a total downer. Marsala? Hmm. I don't know about you, but I don't like watered-down wine in any context. For 2016, Pantone took note and hit us with not one but two top picks for its shades of the year. The pretty in pink Rose Quartz and tranquil blue Serenity feel totally right right now. I mean, why choose boy vs. girl when you can have both?
"Globally, we are experiencing gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted colour trends throughout all other areas of design," explains Pantone. "This more unilateral approach to colour is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity."
Meanwhile, soft pink and blue feel like the perfect balance of colour picks in these turbulent times. "Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace," says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. Who knew pastels could get so deep, right?
Designers at Louis Vuitton, Dior and Oscar de la Renta sent models down the runways in pretty shades of pink and blue making a soft statement about what everyone's talking about right now. And pop culture is feeling the colour combo, too - from Justin Bieber's pink & blue-tinged What Do You Mean video to Grimes' hair. Love! But whether you're out to make a statement or just want to explore your softer side for 2016, pink and blue are perfectly pretty colours to add into your wardrobe for the new year.
Happy New Year! Here's to a 2016 full of clothes that fit and so many shoes that they don't fit in your closet ;)
