It's a well-documented fact that the way you dress affects the way you act. All polished up in your tailored business suit? Looking like a boss is half the battle for a killer presentation. Found sick new hi-tops for your Wednesday night adult hip-hop class? Don't hurt yourself with all that swagger. When it comes to weekends, dressing comfy is meant to put you in the right frame of mind - a chill wardrobe after all, can't help but set you up for having a chill attitude.
Whether you're entertaining your loud family for a big Thanksgiving dinner, are heading to a place where someone else is doing the cooking for you (lucky!) or have nothing but take-out and Netflix on the agenda, these stylishly comfy pieces will put you in a perfectly chill zone for the long weekend ahead.
Happy Thanksgiving, lovelies. But first, let's shop...
STYLIST TIPS | Loved and lived in your chambray shirt these past few years? Me too. Which is why it's time for a highly-justifiable upgrade. This flowy blouse comes complete with an on-point bow-tie which you can leave hanging or tie in a bow, then pair with everything from skirts to leggings, from blazers to joggers, no matter what weekend plans are in the forecast. Since the bow-tie gives you loads of interest at the neckline, skip your necklace in favour of a pair of sparkly studs or a handful of rings.
STYLIST TIPS | As cool as a denim jacket but comfier, as cozy as a puffer but more on-trend, the wool bomber will be your weekend go-to all season long. Wear it with an oversized white button-down and jeans for a casual Thanskgiving get-together or be bold and wear it over a floral dress (see below).
WE LOVE | Wool Varsity Bomber Jacket, $223, GAP
STYLIST TIPS | If you want to impress your mother-in-law or just love to get all dressed up, a fall floral dress is a definite Thanksgiving wardrobe win. Pair it up with over-the-knee merlot boots or tone it down with a pair of sneakers or Chelsea boots.
STYLIST TIPS | Chelsea boots are a weekend must-have - so stylish, so cool, yet still so practical. While black and tan are Chelsea boot basics, we're currently loving all the earthy tones in stores now - from moody burgundy to gorgeous mossy green. Wear your Chelseas with an oversized sweater and jeans or with tights and a fall dress - just make a point to walk away from your Thanksgiving crowd at some point so everyone can see the lace-up detail on the back of these beautiful boots.
WE LOVE | Lace-Back Chelsea Boot, $75, ALDO
STYLIST TIPS | For most of us, the long weekend calls for relaxing - physically, mentally and wardrobe-wise. Since you'll likely be living in jeans most of the weekend, a perfect-fit pair is essential. For some, that might mean a relaxed fit pair of distressed jeans, for others, it will always be about the skinny. Find a mid or high-rise pair to help conceal those second helpings and look for sculpting or shaping jeans (you can find them now at Reitmans, H&M and Hudson's Bay) to keep you feeling toned, even if you haven't hit the gym since last Thanksgiving.
STYLIST TIPS | The black & white buffalo check flannel shirt is a wardrobe workhorse but many women fail to appreciate the myriad ways you can wear it. Wear it tucked in with a knit midi skirt and ankle boots. Try it with jeans, heels and statement earrings, top 2 buttons undone. Tie it around the waist of a plain black knit dress. Give it a go layered under your fall coat so just a hint of print shows through. Instant interest, plus a cozy layer at the ready whenever you need it. Yup, you need one.
WE LOVE | Flannel Shirt, $29.99, H&M
STYLIST TIPS | The clunky Timberland boot is a street style mainstay that isn't going away anytime soon. While the original Timberland is clunky, I'm loving this streamlined new sneaker boot - same great look as the original but just a little more sleek. Oh, and did I mention less expensive? Fall hikes and family photos just got so much cooler.
WE LOVE | Timberland Flannery Boot, $119.99, Journeys
STYLIST TIPS | When it comes to fall fashion, nothing says we've arrived like a great oversized sweater. While I'm always on the hunt for the perfect XL knit, they can be tough to track down - too big can look sloppy, luxe-looking usually translates to an overspent credit card. Luckily, H&M has come out with some gorgeous knits this season, like this amazing mohair blend jumper (love the exaggerated sleeves) that you can wear with everything from a little leather skirt to a pair of leggings and sneakers.
STYLIST TIPS | For those of you who, like me, get giddy at the sight of shiny things, these pants are everything. Wide trousers, a sporty side stripe, a cool zipper detail, an amazing metallic finish, plus an elasticized waist at the back to give some much-needed wiggle room - it all adds up to a pair of pants that will put your other boring trousers to shame. Add a roomy white button-down, some sick white kicks and you'll own off-duty style this weekend.
STYLIST TIPS | Many of us think Julia Roberts on the streets of Beverly Hills when we hear over-the-knee boots. But lest you worry that you'll be mistaken for a lady of the night, don't worry: a simple design, a not-super-pointy toe and just a hint of a heel will let you wear these boots everywhere from school pick-up to a Thanksgiving dinner with your in-laws. Wear them with a pleated midi skirt, a knee-length knit or silky printed dress or even a lace-up bodysuit and pleather mini (kidding on that last one). Oh, and when in doubt, you can always add opaque black tights.
WE LOVE | Leather Over-the-Knee Boot, $220, ALDO
STYLIST TIPS | If your closet's stocked with basics and you feel like you always go to your go-to scarf to add interest, you'll love what a waterfall vest will do for your weekend wardrobe. Add it over an all-black base, then add some contrast with tank ankle boots and add shine with silver jewellery. Thanksgiving dinner outfit: done.
STYLIST TIPS | Joggers hold a key place in all of our hearts, especially on a long, (hopefully) lazy weekend like Thanksgiving. The key with the jogger? Get yourself a pair that can move seamlessly from the couch to the grocery store to entertaining. These joggers feature a front seam, tapered cuffs and figure flattering seaming at the back so while they're incredibly comfy, they don't look remotely sloppy. Netflix sesh? T-shirt. Grocery store run? Grey crew neck sweatshirt, statement sunglasses and black sneakers. No time to change before your company arrives? Add a white silky tank (this one from RW&CO is a must-have staple), chic heels and that waterfall vest I showed above.
STYLIST TIPS | Picture it: a crisp fall day, clear sky, kids running everywhere, family outside for a leisurely hike, turkey in the oven and you, in this glorious plaid wrap with jeans or leggings and a classic white shirt or cashmere sweater, looking practically perfect in every way. Drown out the sounds of your 6 year-old asking for your phone so he can play Pokemon GO, forget about the fact that your turkey's probably burning by now, and just enjoy how awesome you feel in this wrap. And how much you're going to enjoy that glass of wine later. Sigh...don't you just love long weekends?
WE LOVE | Nicola Wrap, $72, Roots
