I just got back from a mid-week trip to GAP to 'research' their new denim edit for spring. While jean shopping for me is usually right up there with bathing suits in terms of changing room terror, I must confess that I found this denim mission surprisingly fun. I tried on overalls, distressed boyfriends, new little crops and a pair of patch pocket flares that make me want to burn my Sorels and switch to sandals. Like, now. Except it's snowing. Sigh.
Spring '16 has a fresh new feel when it comes to denim and I'm loving it. With the fashion world finally calling it quits on stretchy skinnies, the stores are following suit. We're seeing a return of the classic jean again - true blue, zero stretch, fully structured - and I for one, am ready to make the switch. As for silhouette, you really only need to know two main trends: flares and crops.
This season, put aside your skinnies because nothing says 'now' quite like flares. Every fashion girl worth her street style salt has made the switch so there's loads of evidence on Instagram and Pinterest to convince you. If you're curvy, you'll love the balance that flares bring to your body. And if you're tall, I highly recommend you brave a big, bad flare, just because you can.
As for flared crops, wear them right now with little black ankle boots, then later with sandals. Frayed edges make them extra cute. If you just can't bear to tear yourself away from your skinnies, look for high-waisted or ripped-at-the-knee styles. Round out your new denim collection with a pair of clean-wash overalls, a classic soft denim shirt and an A-line button-front jean skirt.
So many great jeans, so little time, right? While we wait for the snow to melt, you can pre-shop spring right now. See my top picks below with hardly a skinny in sight. Come on - I know you can do this...
